You may know Robert L. “Bob” Johnson best for launching Black Entertainment Television (BET) back in 1980. But after selling BET to Viacom for $3 billion, the 66-year-old Johnson has branched out into hotels (Marriott), auto dealerships, part ownership of the Charlotte Bobcats, and even British drama. - http://fortune.com/2012/11/07/bob-johnson-moves-way-beyond-bet/I get that we live in a capitalistic society and we all bow down to the mighty dollar. Bob Johnson may have been the first black billionaire after he sold BET, but he sold out.
The one thing white people had over black people since the inception of this country was media influence. They ran mainstream newspapers, radio stations, and eventually television programming. Whenever white people got fed up, they could announce something a black person did and get a bunch of people amped up to go and kill themselves some blacks. Black people couldn't fight back with the small bits of media that they owned.
Then along comes Bob Johnson, who had the intellect and business smarts to start BET. The first black television station controlled by a black man. BET competed well at one time with networks such as MTV and VH1. It was the first black owned television media ever! But white people can't have black people controlling any kind of media. Not a multi million television station. By the way, he sold it for 3 billion dollars which was a nice profit back then. These days that's what websites are going for. BET may now be worth closer to a trillion dollars with its popularity and influence on black culture. You should have held out a little longer Bob!
Too bad black people are far behind when it comes to computers and technology. There are no black social networks and there should be. Black people should be tired of white nerds who can care less profiting off of black people on their website media and controlling how content is delivered to black people. There is just something insanely wrong with that.
I was on BET's website for information and I felt like I was on a Republican website. I felt like I was being pacified and knew I wasn't going to get any real information about my inquiry. In fact, if you go to BET's website, it's a joke. They want to extort money from you while they pacify you and keep you calm and quite, but still spending. No real content or any stories that would open up any minds or train of thought.
This is why black media should be owned and controlled by black people. This is why we need black social networks and more black media. It's because we are awakening from our sleep now and we are creating movements like never before for the purpose of our children and the children that they will leave behind. For the future of black people!
